DENVER (KWGN) — The State of the City address Tuesday started with all the traditional hallmarks of a civic function.
The Pledge of Allegiance, the presentation of the colors.
And then Rene Marie was introduced to sign the national anthem.
Instead of the "Star-Spangled Banner,", the crowd heard "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," sometimes called the "Black National Anthem," first sung as a celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday 108-years ago.
Marie sang the lyrics to the tune of the "Star-Spangled Banner."
Mayor John Hickenlooper says, at first, he was offended.
"We were as surprised as anyone and she didn't tell anyone, she made this decision with her husband, her musical mentor and decided just to do an artistic expression and she kind of wove the two songs together," he said....

I truly appreciate it.
Probably I can say with this blog make, more some interesting topics.
This woman has truly lost her mind. Everyone needs to relax here. We are not in power one bit.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says it best: There is a time and place for everything.
That was not the time. When they ask you to sing the star spangled banner, you sing that not create your own revolutionary issue especially when you are singing before the Denver Mayor and Council.
That is crazy.
Now, with Diddy showing a shirt "Obama or Die" and this mess, you are going to see White America quash the 2008 Version of Nat Turner for real in a ugly way.
So, everyone just chill and relax and let him get in the white house first instead of thinking you have attained the promise land yet.
Barack Obama's possible presidency cannot be an impediment to Black people freely expressing themselves. If white folks are uncomfortable with Black people being wholesomly artistic and boundless, then that's their problem. But just as Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright is a human-being and truly free to defend himself against the Obama-aided vituperative attacks ob him, this lady is equally free to keep that blood-stained banner alive. Go ahead Marie!
what she did parallels not in the least with Diddy's choice of wardrobe and Mr. Turner, Obama is not, don't see it in his future either. although she has not admitted it, she obviously felt that "lift evry voice and sing" was far more patriotic than the national anthem (i haven't sang it, or recited the Pledge since 5th grade) the song means little to myself, and i dare you to ask the american indian his/her opinion. so just how american is the anthem? maybe she decided like other's before her, Ms. Tubman, Dr. King, etc. to be boundless in her efforts to hold up the blood-stained banner. i think that it is ridiculous to tie every racially conscious effort to Barack Obama's efforts in the White House.
