Al Sharpton Says Obama Was Right to Tell Black People to "Stop Complaining"

Your Black World reports.

While there have been a long list of critics who were disappointed with President Obama's decision to tell black people to "stop complaining" at the Congressional Black Caucus convention last week, one of his supporters is saying that he's right.  Rev. Al Sharpton said that President Obama was right in all that he said to the crowd last week during his controversial speech.

"I expect all of you to march with me and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying. We are going to press on. We've got work to do, CBC," Obama said during his speech.

"He said this is what I've done, and it helps blacks and helps the county and now let's get to work," Sharpton said.
"It's important to remind people who may be discouraged, don't compare him to the Almighty, compare him to the alternative."

Sharpton is one of President Obama's strongest supporters, saying during a 60 Minutes interview that he would never criticize the president.  His close relationship with the Obama Administration has led some to say that it contrasts with his role as a civil rights advocate.

There are others who disagree with Sharpton about Obama.  While President Obama told African Americans to stop complaining in the middle of the highest unemployment rates in the country, he has never used similar language toward any other group, including gays, Jews, Labor Unions or Hispanics.
Rep Maxine Waters had this to say:   I’m not sure who the president was addressing. I found that language a bit curious,” Waters said. “The president spoke to the Hispanic Caucus… he certainly didn’t tell them to stop complaining and he never would say that to the gay and lesbian community who really pushed him on don’t ask don’t tell or even in a speech to APEC, he would never say to the Jewish community stop complaining about Israel.
"Ordinary (African-American voters) are hurting and want action, but they are not going to abandon ship and are not the ones who are all but saying (Obama) sold-out," said a Democratic staffer for a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. "That's coming from people who didn't back Obama from the start."
According to a recent poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News, Obama's "strong favorability" rating among African Americans has dropped from 83% five months ago to 58% right now.

This is my president & I'll do my duty, but don't tell me to be quiet now just b/c he's talking to US now. I know he's the prez of ALL the people & I appreciate all he's accomplished, but the last thing he can ask of us now is to be quiet. Baled out Wallstreet & auto folk & that didn't help US much. It took too long to invite the CBC to his house, & when he went on the road he seemed to bypass the hood ... I'll stop there (but you KNOW I could go on). Obama is my guy but don't tell me to be quiet NOW!

"But the hushing of the criticism of honest opponents is a dangerous thing. It leads some of the best of the critics to unfortunate silence and paralysis of effort, and others to burst into speech so passionately and intemperately as to lose listeners. Honest and earnest criticism from those whose interests are most nearly touched,—criticism of writers by readers, of government by those governed, of leaders by those led, —this is the soul of democracy and the safeguard of modern society." ... "In failing thus to state plainly and unequivocally the legitimate demands of their people, even at the cost of opposing an honored leader, the thinking classes of American Negroes would shirk a heavy responsibility,—a responsibility to themselves, a responsibility to the struggling masses, a responsibility to the darker races of men whose future depends so largely on this American experiment, but especially a responsibility to this nation,—this common Fatherland." ... "We have no right to sit silently by while the inevitable seeds are sown for a harvest of disaster to our children, black and white." -W. E. B. DuBois, The Souls of Black Folk, 1903

What I got out of the President's comments is that we should stop "complianing with our mouth", and start complaining with our actions. Where were most of you this last election (2010) when the T-Party swept in because a lot of you were complaining with your mouths, and not with your votes? He was stating that the same will happen in 2012 if we just sit back and talk, instead of marching, and getting involved in the education of our children, and participating in educational and/or vocational improvement opportunities for ourselves, etc.

I agree with the President's tone and tenor about the complaining from the Black base. Being African American & having voted for Presidents since I registered in 1971 and not even Bill Clinton represented my interests. My wife & I campaigned for BO for 18 months during that time we lost our home and was sleeping in our car on the day he took office. I have been underemployed for 14 years & if anyone thinks complaining will help is dreaming. We have to get tough not feel sorry for the plight of Black America. We are here because of enduring strengths of our forefathers and they never complained nor should we. Look at the opposition the president is facing they are UNIFIED against him where we seem to be getting weak in the knees. This is what the opposition is looking for and you are helping them achieve their goals. Would Sojourner Truth be complaining?

Best regards,
Al & Diane Williams

I have tried looking at this speech from all kind of angles. I got no inspiration from the President's "black" speech. Sounded more like a skit from that 90's show "Living Color" or something.

And,I still haven't gotten over the fact that our President does not even come into our areas, but instead chooses to roll through rural white america and take pics with their children.

If President Obama and the secret service are not comfortable stopping in our areas; least he could roll the window down and holla that he is thinking of us.

I will probably be voting for an independent candidate in 2012. My family and I left the Democratic party years ago. Lets face it, they take Black folk votes for granted.

I agree that we DO need to stop complaining...especially when an African, African-American, Black or whatever you prefer, person tells us to get off of our butts and "be about it, not talk about it"! He just go along with the program when we feel that white America is holding us back, but as soon as one of our own calls you out, you raise your voice to the heavens. It may be true that we may never run the world like whites and jews, but, in this country, we have enough opportunities to be successful enough to live decent lives. Yes, it most likely will be a struggle and require huge sacrifices. But, the goal in life should be to make the world a better place when you leave it. You may live in poverty for the rest of your life, but do everything in your power so your kids will have a chance to either make the neighborhood better or get out with a secondary education. There are so many scholarships and grants out there that go unclaimed; no reason for this, especially since everyone has access to the internet (that's right, if you live on a bus line, you can get to a library and use their computers)! Also, we have to stop giving Asians $9 billion per year on hair care products. And if you are part of the mass that shells out $20 billion per year to your church, you need to be asking where are the meal programs, private schools and job training programs; back in the day, whenever the black community had needs, all you had to do was go to the church. But the main thing is that we have to come together to accomplish this. Don't get m wrong, whatever you can do as an individual to improve your situation, you do it. But in order to prosper as a people, we have to come together somehow. Always remember that the plan is to keep us divided.

SUPPORT OUR PRESIDENT AND OUR FAMILIES
By: David W. Johnson, Jr.

Since we seem to like fighting so much, I got an idea
Instead of fighting one another, let fight our enemies
For our President and our Race, more we have to care
The racist again want to see us just hanging from trees

Thanks to supporters the Health Care Plan was passed
It’s God’s message that we have a Real Man President
African American again are called the “N” word and harassed
Whomever did it, should have been beat to the cement

First of all, we must stop calling ourselves that racist name
Passing of this bill is just the beginning of our troubles
The President’s enemies will still try to put him to shame
They will enjoy hurting him like children blowing bubbles

Listening to the radio or watching the News it was not easy
Racist was degrading our President without any shame
Trust me; what they might be planning makes me very uneasy
Wakeup Brothers and Sisters, this is by far no longer a game

If we want to stay in this game of success let’s lend support
Our enemies but not our President wants to see us long gone
They smile when they see us in caskets or handcuffs in court
Prefer us in graves or prison yards, not our front lawn

Brothers and Sisters, we must stop destroying one another
As adults, if we stop our children will also do the same
God want us to love and respect, not shot and kill each other
Stop killing one another like it’s a Playstation or X-Box game

There is a law in the works to bring in our replacement Race
Things taking place everyday, many of us don’t have a hint
Everybody does not like you because of a smile on their face
We all need to, “Support Our President & Our Families”

Stop Sitting Around Ignoring Our Problems
Children Need Help Adults Need Help

It took me a while, but if finally occurred to me that no one owes me anything. After being gifted with the blessing of birth, and loving parents who nurtured me, and demanded that I take advantage of the educational and spiritual opportunities that are available, they were transitioned when I was 21 (my mom at 39, and father at 43). The penitentiary--which I ultimately used as a maturing instrument--completed my maturity. That's another issue; why don't brothers and sisters use their incarceration to have time serve them, as opposed to just service time. I used that opportunity to acquire over a hundered hours of college credits, taught high school GED math, and became proficient as a disc jockey and sports announcer. Other "brothers" just spent their time in the laundry, chow hall, coal pile, or just playing basketball, dominoes, or reminiscing about the streets. Les Brown, and others have always suggested that, "With every calamity, there is an opportunity". If more of us thought like that, there would be less "complaining", and more seeking for opportunities. I see I've got too much to say; so I'll chime in (again) at another time.

If Our Enemies Destroy President Obama
By: David W. Johnson, Jr.

Too many ignorant and racist Americans are against our President
Even some Democratics are stepping down in order to destroy him
An African American in the White House, many Americans resent
They would like to return to the days of hanging us from a tree limb

Brothers and Sisters, we are just plain stupid when it comes to reality
We are walking around, clothes hanging down and bodies overblown
In one another, children, or our race, we have very little confidentiality
The showing of Love and Support we once had seemed to be long gone

Everyday our children is crying and begging for our positive leadership
Instead of pulling them up on their feet, we are helping throw them away
Adults must start saying positive things instead of lots of filth from our lips
Children going to schools, that same filth they say to their teachers everyday

President Obama and the First Lady is trying so hard to make us wakeup
It’s imagine we can just walk around and do nothing to bring about change
Daily hundreds of young African American males are killed or locked up
Our so-called men and women must stop walking as if they are deranged

Real Men and Women are trying desperately to save the African Americans
In order for adults to save themselves, they must start by saving our children
We must get out in our neighborhoods and put together some positive plans
Homes or neighborhoods, children have few adults on whom they can depend

Young males these days, abandon their children because it happened to them
If older males abandon children and beat on females, young ones will imitate
Worthless adult males are the reasons our young males and killed or condemn
With no Real Men in their lives, our young people are dying at an alarming rate

African Americans stop being males and females and become Men and Women
Remember how great we were raised by Grandpa, Grandma, Daddy and Momma
Our children need good parents in their lives on whom they can trust and depend
We have no future in America, “If Our Enemies Destroy President Obama”

Re: Stop Procrastinating & Step-Up To Save Our Children

Dear One & All,

God has been trying to direct me for more than twenty some years and I have been moving in His directions but also allowing Satan to step-in and pull me off track.

Let me assure you that as of this day, 09/28/2011, God is fully in charge of my life. God told me today to stop saying I believe in Him, getting down on my knees and praying and then getting up and worshipping Him and Satan. It was almost as if He was visible, setting next to me at my computer.

His message was so clearer and understandable that I had to turn it into a Motivational Poem so others could read His message. My Brothers and Sisters of all Races but especially my African American Race, let me assure you, God is trying His best to wake us up.

God wants us all to work together and not against one another. He knows that Satan will always have control of some people but He would like for His people to save as many people as possible from Satan’s claws and jaws.

When it comes to People Saving People, God knows who He can trust. If you have a computer, go to Google or Yahoo and put in “Civil Rights Activist” and click on “Images.” You can see picture of so many people who fought for our freedom. Many of them gave their lives. God stood by them the entire time. He is doing the same for us but we need to be returning the favor.

We need to “Save Our People.” Especially our young males. God’s and our enemies want to destroy them because they know if they do, they can erase the African Americans. I am sure you remember what happened to the Indians.

Brothers and Sisters, God has told me to tell you to stop hanging out with Satan, or just doing nothing while our enemies are constantly planning how to destroy our Race. We can prosper without killing ourselves and others. Brains and unity not bullets and drugs are the answer to our future.

Please, do not ignore God’s Message. Start helping one another to help our President, our children and save our Race. America is building more prisons and less schools. Who do you think they are being built for? If you do not know you must have been living on Mars, all of your life. This message is not from me but from God through me. Please listen to God!!!!

Wake up my people dont get mad at the President, get mad at the sytem, get mad at yourself for not doing more. Get up and Stand up for our rights!

The only good thing that will come out of President Obama being elected is that this scam artist Al Sharpton is exposed for the opportunist that he is. This clown never deserved any credibility in the black community. What so call activist would tell people NOT to criticize their elected officials white or black??? Did President Obama take off his bedroom slippers and march against republicans with the debt ceiling compromise OR the Bush tax cuts OR a public option for universal healthcare? Hell no! President Obama needs to take his own damn advice.

Jews. gays, Latinos and whites whined and complain more than anyone and they got results! Black people supported this president with 95% approval ratings when these groups didn't and we get talked down to, ignored and disrespected.

This president bowed down to just about EVERYONE including racist white teabaggers/republicans who wanted to see him fail but wont show the same respect to his own race that gives him over 95% of their vote! Whenever this president speaks before a black audience he's criticizing blacks!! PRESIDENT OBAMA IS NOT CRITICIZING WHITES AND OTHER SO CALL SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS. That's because he knows he can take us for granted when it comes to voting. Because of the open racism of the republican party he and his white advisors knows that blacks will NEVER vote republican in large numbers.

The worst that could happen to this president in 2012 is that some blacks will stay at home. Black people need to chalk this up to a learning experience. For me that learning experience is NOT voting for President Obama in 2012. I hate to say this but black people would have been better off with a WHITE democrat as president instead of a black one who throws us under the bus every chance he gets to appeal white voters.

BLACK GOP ENGAGES BLACK DEMOCRATS POLITICAL CONFUSION…
The escalating black American political controversy that is orbiting President Barack Obama’s leadership style is now raging, following the remarks by comedian Steve Harvey that Cornel West and Tavis Smiley are “Uncle Toms.”
Specifically, Harvey was critiquing the Poverty Tour organized by Tavis Smiley and Cornel West, as well as their vociferous criticism of the president’s leadership, as it relates to the needs of the poor in particular.
Referencing Tavis’ suggestion that the president should sit down with him and West for two or three days to discuss poverty in America, Harvey said, “Who in the hell got two or three days to sit down with your ass? I ain’t got time to sit down with your monkey behind for two are three days, let alone the President if the United States. We got three wars going on the economy is crashing, and we going to sit with Tavis’ ass for three days?” Harvey also alluded to a more sinister motive for the West, Smiley Poverty Tour asking, “Where are you getting the money for the buses?”
The black political rift began many months ago when Tavis Smiley and Al Sharpton traded political barbs on their respective radio shows, and it quickly escalated into a public confrontation on the radio airways. The rift between the two men centered on a critique by Smiley that Sharpton was carry water for president Obama, and was letting him (the president) off the hook concerning advancing the “black agenda.” Sharpton responded in kind to Smiley’s political critique, and the controversy quickly became politically airborne.
